I mentioned in my 2012 hair round up thingy that I really wanted to improve on styling in 2013. Which means, you know, actually DOING STYLES. But, like many of you, it's hard for me to actually follow through on New Year Resolutions. What helps me actually get on that pony and go ride off into the sunset mastering styles left and right? Having someone keep me accountable. Aka you lovely people. Introducing the new series, A Style For...[insert reason here]
What is this all about? It's going to be me posting a look/tutorial that I want to master and or accomplish by the end of the month. While documenting my success and dramatic, horrible failures at the same time. Why the failures? Because if you're anything like me, you have this absolutely ridiculous idea that other people just "get" styles. Like no effort at all. And that's bullsh-. Rome wasn't built in a day and no one masters hair styling in one either.
Style for the month of January: Perm Rod Set
I've always loved perm rod/roller sets. I think they're super cute! Especially when you do small curls! And they're pretty affordable when compared to some of the styling tools other naturals love *cough* CurlFormers *cough*. You can get 60 rollers for just over $10 at Sally's and possibly even cheaper on ebay.
I think I'm going to be using MahoganyCurl's tutorial for the first attempt and look for others depending on what does and doesn't work. Why hers? I really like the fact she did it on dry hair because I (1) despise sitting under a dryer and (2) It's a great way to stretch and old twist out, something I'm always on the look out for. I'm not super thrilled about the fact she slept with the rollers in (not even sure how that's possible) but hopefully if I put the set in early enough I should be ok by the end of the day.
Right?

Houuuuh it should be really fun to follow your experiments!! can't wait :D
I don't either understand how she can sleep at night with all these plastic bits on her head, while I can only stand a very high and loose bun ^^
And I understand why you want to masterize this style, it's totally CUTE!! The curls look sooooo bouncy, and I noticed that they go back to their original lenght after been pulled (on? onto? nothing? geez!! lol ), it's unusual! ;)
I know right! I can't sleep with my hair hair in anything but a bun, braids or twists. If there is ONE bobby pin in my hair I can't sleep.
I just hope the bounce factor isn't a texture thing. She's got curls way looser than mine, but I'm ok with losing some of it. As long as I get hair that cute! :)
I love this!! I want to try it, maybe this weekend. I hope I can pull it off.
Please report back when you finish! Especially on the sleeping in the rollers bit, I just dont understand how that's possible!
I loved your post on Curly Rods. I have been meaning to try this style on my hair but haven't gotten around to do so. I was inspired by the video's all over again.
Yay! I hope it works out for you!
