I'm glad I read the directions on the jar because it's not a deep conditioner as I originally thought. It's actually a pre-poo--you scoop it out with your not fingers because it's surprisingly hard, rub it on your hands until it melts into an oil, slap on hair, wait 20 minutes and wash. Ok. Shouldn't be too hard. I used a plastic spoon to get it out of the jar because it's pretty solid despite it's ability to melt and melting it in my hands took a surprising amount of effort. This needs serious heat to melt. It's about half way between coconut oil and shea butter in terms of Easy of Meltability in Hands.
I accidentally ended up keeping it on my hair for a good 20 hours, because I didn't have time to wash when I originally planned to. Opps. The smell, thankfully, faded to the point I didn't notice it and no one around me commented on it. Or they we're too nice to comment on it, I'll never know. When wash day (finally) rolled around, my hair was really really soft pre-wash. And even when water hit my hair I had no problem finger detangling before applying my shampoo which NEVER happens. Usually as soon as my hair touches water, I start getting knots. I also noticed that detangling my hair in the shower was easier and I didn't need to deep condition my hair after.
Take two & three: Leave it in for 20 minutes and 40 minutes respectively. Now that I was actively tracking the time, I noticed the smell started to fade around 30 minutes but I actually...kind of liked it? It's very earthy. I still got similar results-easier detangling in the shower but I did have to deep condition after the 20 minute session. Not sure if my hair was just in bad shape pre-washing or if that's related to the product.
Would I buy this for myself....Probably not. It's just too expensive. And since I'm not used to pre-pooing, I'd like to try it with some cheaper oils I already own (coconut oil and castor oil in particular) to see if these results are tied to the product or the method. Keep an eye out for this in my products revisited series. I can guarantee and appearance once I compare it to other oils.
