2013 Beauty Favorites

Alice in Nappyland's 2013 Beauty Favorites

I don't think I've ever done a favorites post before. I have done yearly regimen updates when it comes to my hair but I don't think I've ever said THESE ARE THE THINGS I LOVE. Unfortunately, you're going to be on the edge of your seats for a hot second because I will not be talking about hair stuff in this post. I'll be breaking down my regimen for 2013 soon. Hold tight!

Makeup

Alice in Nappyland's 2013 Makeup Favorites

Benefit Cosmetic's Hello Flawless Powder Foundation in Amber I'm So Glamber: I got this as a sample with their How to Look the Best at Everything gift set for my birthday and I've been sleeping on this for a good chunk of the year! Since I've started using it more regularly, it's quickly becoming the only foundation I reach for every day wear.

Origin's Quick, Hide Concealer in Deep: I tried a bunch of concealers this year and this is still my favorite. It's very easy to work with, blends beautifully and most importantly stays put. All day.

L'oreal Dream Lumi Concealer in Deep: I don't use this as a concealer. I use it as an under eye brightener over my concealer and on my brow bone to highlight. It adds such a beautiful natural, fresh, glowy look to my skin. I usually keep it in my purse for quick "shoot, I need to do makeup at office" days or for touch ups.

Rimmel ScandalEyes Lycra Flex Mascara in Ultra Black: What really made this mascara stand out to me was the fact it doesn't make my lashes feel hard or crunchy. They actually have some bend and spring to them. Like your bare lashes but better!

Rimmel ScandalEyes Waterproof Kohl Eyeliner in Black: Soft, sumdgey, surprisingly pigmented, and perfect for your waterline. And you can usually pick it up free/at reduced cost in a set with a Rimmel mascara! Doesn't get much better than that.

E.L.F H.D. Powder: My friend HK put this on my radar because she nearly made me ship it to Asia when she was running low. And if it keeps her matte in 99% humidity and 90+F it would definitely be good for me. And it is.

E.L.F Mineral Infused Primer in Brightening Lavender: Even though I don't really notice a "brightening" effect, I really like these primer. Cheap (only $6! Wait for a sale and you can get it even cheaper!), effective and cruelty free. Can't ask for much else.

Physicians Formula Shimmer Strips in Waikiki: Most stunning highlighter EVER. It adds an amazing I just-got-back-from-a-super-restful-vacation glow to my skin.  And it's super travel friendly since all of these shades can be used on your eyes too.

Physicians Formula Eye Booster 2-in-1 Lash Boosting Eyeliner + Serum in Ultra Black: Does it actually boost your eyelashes? Who knows! But it's super dark, pen style liner that won't break the bank; especially if you pick it up during a BOGOFREE/BOGO50 coupon or combine it with a tear away coupon!

Ben Nye Bella Luxury Powder in Banana: For the first part of the year I've been really into a completely matte face.  To add dimension to that completely flat look, I've been using this to set my under eye concealer and highlight and it's pretty stellar. It's also been a great when it comes to color correcting my too red concealers and foundations. No wonder people are coo coo for cocoa puffs over it.

MAC Face and Body Foundation in C7: This is my go to Fancy Face foundation. I usually only wear it to events or when I need to look super perfect. It has a beautiful finish, light/medium coverage and since it has no SPF no flash back in photos!

Wet n Wild Megalast Lipstick in Cherry Bomb:I've always been intimated by dark lips but this is making my change my tune. It's inexpensive so I didn't feel bad for my initial purchase and I feel so freaking powerful wearing it. This lipstick, winged liner, and lots of mascara? Can't tell me nuthin.

Skincare

Alice in Nappyland's 2013 Skincare Favorites

Clinique's Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel: I have combination skin and most moisturizers leave me feeling greasy instead of hydrated. Not this one. And it doesn't aggravate my sensitive skin!

Lush Cosmetic's Let the Good Times Roll: While this is marketed as a cleanser, I usually use it once or twice a week to exfoliate. It's extremely gentle, super effective, and smells divine--like creme brulee or some other fancy French desert I can't place.

Lush Cosmetic's Santa's Lip Scrub: For someone who drinks a metric ton of water, I have stupidly dry lips. But this puppy is changing that! Here's to soft lips in 204!

SheaMoisture's Olive & Green Tea Shea Butter Soap: I swore up and down on their Black Soap but lately it's been irritating my skin, especially around my nose piercing. I've swapped it out for this much gentler cleanser that I picked up on a whim and all my problems have gone away. Woo hoo!

Aztec Healing Indian Healing Clay: Even though this was a disaster in my hair, it's done wonders for my skin. I usually make a face mask with it once and month to combat Auntie Flow's kids--Mt. Vesuvius, Mt. Doom and Everest.

CoTz Sunscreen in SPF 40: I wear sunblock all the time. If I'm going outside, I'm putting sunblock on. Period. End of discussion. This is the only one I've found that (1) has no scent (2) doesn't leave a greasy residue and (3) doesn't make my makeup slip and slide.

EOS Lip Balms in all flavors: I keep one of these bad boys on my nightstand and use it every night. I'm so glad they came out with a huge set of them earlier this year. They're one of the few lip balms that actually leaves my lips hydrated instead of just coated.

  1. Nice favorites list! I'm going to bookmark this because some of your favorites have just made my wish list. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Yay! Does everything on your list have a review? If not, I'd be happy to bump it/them to the top of my "To Review" list :)

  3. The SM Black Soap does (great review btw), but not the SM Olive & Green Tea Soap, Rimmel Mascara & Liner, Wet n Wild Lipstick, or the Clinique Moisturizer. I'd greatly appreciate a review for the Clinique Moisturizer because I struggle to find a moisturizer for my combo skin that won't make me break out or make my t-zone look super greasy.

  4. Love this list! I recently bought the ELF primer as well! I haven't used *that* many primers but I find the texture a bit powdery and odd. I used to use a Victoria's Secret one that I really liked. Also question: are you habesha??!

  5. Which one do you have? From what I've seen floating around the internet, all of them have different textures. This one feels a little...mousse-y? But it does dry to a slightly powder-y finish.

Yep! Born in the US though. You?

  6. *takes notes* I'll try to get the Clinque Moisturizer up early next year since that's what you're most interested in. The thing with skincare is that it's really person specific so you may want to get a sample (I think most, if not all, department stores carry them) before running out and picking up the bottle because I ranted and raved about it.

  8. I have the purple brightening one as well. It doesn't have a brightening effect for me either (maybe a dark skin thing?), but I bought it during a half-off sale so I can't be mad at it. I'm also a first-gen habesha! I just came across your blog and got so excited haha.

  9. I got it during a half off sale too! I wanted to get the clear on, which is the one I heard people ranting and raving about, but it was completely sold out by the time I placed me order. Boooo..

    Yay first gen-ers!
