Miss Manga Black Angel Mascara Review

Miss Manga Black Angel Mascara Review

L’Oreal’s Miss Manga Black Angel Mascara has been on my radar since it launched because manga lashes are my kinda lashes. Lots of volume, length, and the perfect amount of clumpiness. My hope that this would be THE mascara for me were raised even higher once I heard it was part of the Voluminous line. Voluminous Carbon Black is hands down one of my favorite mascaras of all time and I’ve been using it (on and off – such is the nature of beauty blogging) consistently for years.

What’s in the box

Here’s the thing about the Miss Manga collection, it’s huge. There are eight mascaras in it that all have nearly identical packaging so be sure to read the box to make sure you’re getting the color and/or formula that you want and need. I went for Miss Manga Black Angel because it is said to be the darkest in the range, but there is no waterproof version it. Which is a bit of a downer, you’ll see way later.

Miss Manga Black Angel cone shape wand

I really like the cone shape of the wand, it makes it very easy to get all the tiny lashes at the corners of my eye. But you do have to wipe the tip off before using it because it tends to get and hold quite a bit of product. What makes this wand interesting is how super flexible it is. It takes some getting used to because brushing it through your lashes is…springy? Bouncy? It’s weird. I don’t hate it, but I could certainly do without.

How it goes on

The formula is a drier than Voluminous, which is an extremely wet mascara if you’ve never tried it, but it’s not a dry formula by any means. If you’re someone who likes long, wispy lashes I suggest you head for the hills RIGHT NOW. This is not for you. Check out the spikes in the before and after  below, and that’s after two pretty light coats.

one eyes

This isn’t a bad mascara, but I don’t love it.  It has a lot going for it, the shape of the brush, the super cute packaging, my manga worthy lashes, even the bendy wand was a nice (but gimkey) touch. The deal breaker was the fact it flaked.  I’ve been a big fan of L’Oreal mascaras because I’ve never had an issue with them flaking on me or irritating my eyes so this was a major and unexpected surprise. Also, it wasn’t nearly as dark as I expected it to be. The Voluminous line is known for being super inky, the original in blackest black is like putting ink on your lashes after just one coat, so I expected it to be darker.

Does this mean I’m not going to pick up the new Miss Manga Rock mascara? Nope! I’m just getting the waterproof version. When it eventually turns up in my local stores/online.
